Histoire

Le tournoi a été créé en 1970 par Roger Brennwald et comprenait à l’origine principalement des joueurs de haut niveau suisses. [5] Il est devenu un événement sur le circuit de tennis du Grand Prix en 1977, lorsque Björn Borg a remporté le titre et y est resté jusqu’en 1989. Depuis 2009, il fait partie de la série World Tour 500 du circuit ATP . Avant 2009, il faisait partie de l’ATP World Series de 1990 à 1999 qui est devenu l’ ATP International Series en 2000. Il a lieu chaque année à la St. Jakobshalle de Bâle , en Suisse, en octobre, depuis 1995.

Roger Federer , natif de Bâle, détient le record du plus grand nombre de titres en simple, ayant remporté le tournoi dix fois, en 2006-2008, 2010-2011, 2014-2015 et 2017-2019. Federer a atteint le record final quinze fois (2000-2001, 2006-2015, 2017-2019), qui est également un record de l’ère ouverte pour la plupart des finales atteintes lors d’un seul événement ATP.

Outre Federer, deux autres joueurs suisses ont remporté le titre en simple : Michel Burgener , en 1972, et Jakob Hlasek , en 1991. Le tournoi s’est déroulé sur ses courts intérieurs de couleur rouge jusqu’en 2010 ; à partir de 2011, la couleur du court a été changée pour les courts bleus uniformes de la plupart des autres tournois de la saison européenne d’automne en salle.

Le tournoi a été parrainé dans le passé par Ebel et Davidoff . [6]
