Les matchs peuvent également être joués les mardis ou mercredis au lieu des jeudis réguliers en raison de conflits d’horaire.

Format

Chaque match nul se joue sur deux manches , chaque équipe jouant une manche à domicile. L’équipe qui a le score global le plus élevé sur les deux manches passe au tour suivant. Dans le cas où les scores cumulés terminent le niveau, la règle des buts à l’extérieur s’applique, c’est-à-dire que l’équipe qui a marqué le plus de buts à l’extérieur sur les deux manches progresse. Si les buts à l’extérieur sont également égaux, alors trente minutes de prolongation sont jouées, divisées en deux mi-temps de quinze minutes. La règle des buts à l’extérieur est à nouveau appliquée après la prolongation, c’est-à-dire que s’il y a des buts marqués pendant la prolongation et que le score total est toujours égal, l’équipe visiteuse se qualifie en raison du plus grand nombre de buts marqués à l’extérieur. Si aucun but n’est marqué pendant la prolongation, l’égalité est départagée par des tirs au but .[5]

Lors du tirage au sort de chaque tour, les équipes sont classées en fonction de leurs coefficients de club de l’UEFA 2011 , [6]avec les équipes divisées en pots classés et non classés. Une équipe tête de série est tirée au sort contre une équipe non tête de série, l’ordre des manches dans chaque match nul étant décidé au hasard. En raison du temps limité entre les matches, les tirages au sort des deuxième et troisième tours de qualification ont lieu avant que les résultats du tour précédent ne soient connus. Le classement de chaque tirage est effectué en supposant que tous les clubs les mieux classés du tour précédent sont victorieux. Si un club de rang inférieur est victorieux, il prend simplement la place de son adversaire vaincu au tour suivant. Avant le tirage au sort, l’UEFA peut former des “groupes” conformément aux principes fixés par la Commission des compétitions interclubs, mais ils sont purement pour la commodité du tirage au sort et ne ressemblent pas à de véritables groupements au sens de la compétition,

Les vainqueurs des 35 rencontres du troisième tour se sont qualifiés pour le tour des barrages , ainsi que 26 nouveaux entrants et 15 équipes qui ont abandonné le troisième tour de qualification de la Ligue des champions .
