L’ Oscar du meilleur scénario original est l’ Oscar du meilleur scénario non basé sur du matériel déjà publié. Il a été créé en 1940 en tant que prix d’écriture distinct de l’ Oscar de la meilleure histoire . À partir des Oscars de 1957, les deux catégories ont été combinées pour n’honorer que le scénario.

Woody Allen a le plus de nominations dans cette catégorie avec 16, et le plus de récompenses avec 3 (pour Annie Hall , Hannah and Her Sisters , et Midnight in Paris ). En 1996, Joel Coen et Ethan Coen sont devenus les seuls frères et sœurs à s’imposer dans cette catégorie (pour Fargo ). ^[3] Francis Ford Coppola ( Patton , 1970) ^[4] et Sofia Coppola ( Lost in Translation , 2003) sont le seul couple père-fille à l’avoir emporté. ^[5]

Preston Sturges a été nominé pour deux films différents la même année (1944) : Hail the Conquering Hero et The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek . Oliver Stone a obtenu la même distinction en 1986, pour Platoon et Salvador . Maurice Richlin et Stanley Shapiro ont été nominés en 1959 pour Operation Petticoat et Pillow Talk et ont gagné pour ce dernier.
