L’ Open d’Europe de Hambourg (anciennement l’Open d’Allemagne de tennis ) est un tournoi de tennis annuel pour joueurs professionnels organisé à Hambourg , en Allemagne, et faisant partie de l’ Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour. Avant 2021, c’était un événement réservé aux hommes. [1]

Le tournoi se joue sur des courts extérieurs en terre battue [2] au centre de tennis Am Rothenbaum dans le quartier Harvestehude . Pendant une grande partie de son histoire, le tournoi a été disputé en mai, en tant que précurseur de l’ Open de France sur le calendrier du tennis professionnel. L’événement féminin a eu lieu initialement séparément de 1982 à 1983 (à Hittfeld), puis de 1987 à 2002. Il faisait partie du circuit WTA et existait sous plusieurs noms sponsorisés différents, plus communément connus sous le nom de Citizen Cup (1987–1995). ) et la Coupe Betty Barclay (1999-2002). WTA Hambourg était l’endroit où Monica Seles , alors n ° 1 mondiale, a été poignardée lors d’un match par un fan de tennis local désordonné le 30 avril 1993. En 2021, Hambourg est revenu au calendrier de la tournée WTA, faisant partie de son Catégorie de tournois de la série WTA 250 .

Histoire

L’édition inaugurale a eu lieu au ‘Eisenbahnverein auf der Uhlenhorst’ (Uhlenhorst Railway Club) et a été jouée au meilleur des trois sets. À partir de la deuxième édition en 1893, le tournoi était un meilleur des cinq sets jusqu’en 2007, date à laquelle il est revenu (comme d’autres événements non du Grand Chelem) à une finale au meilleur des trois sets. Les cinq premières éditions, de 1892 à 1896, étaient exclusivement ouvertes aux joueurs allemands et autrichiens. [4]

De 1898 à 1901, les championnats allemands ont eu lieu à Bad Homburg vor der Höhe . Une épreuve de double masculin a été ajoutée au tournoi en 1902.

À l’origine un événement du Grand Prix Tennis Tour , entre 1978 et 1989, il faisait partie des Grand Prix Super Series . De 1990 à 2008, il faisait partie de l’ ATP Masters Series . En 2009, le tournoi a été rétrogradé à un événement ATP Tour 500 . Selon les responsables du tournoi, cela entrave sérieusement sa capacité à attirer des joueurs de haut niveau, qui sont plus susceptibles de participer à des tournois qui leur rapportent plus de points. Les responsables du tournoi ont poursuivi l’ATP en 2007 pour arrêter le déclassement, mais un jury américain a décidé en 2008 que cela ne constituait pas une violation des lois sur les monopoles.
