Les tournois ATP Masters 1000 (anciennement connus sous le nom de ATP Masters Series ) sont une série annuelle de neuf tournois de tennis mettant en vedette les joueurs les mieux classés du circuit ATP . Histoire

La série a été introduite en 1990 avec la création de l’ ATP Tour en réunissant les neuf tournois les plus prestigieux du circuit de tennis du Grand Prix précédent . Les résultats des événements ATP Masters rapportent aux joueurs plus de points de classement que les tournois réguliers, mais moins que les événements du Grand Chelem ou les finales ATP de fin d’année. Jusqu’en 2007, la plupart des finales des Masters étaient disputées sous forme de matchs au meilleur des cinq sets, mais à partir de 2008, tous les événements étaient décidés dans des matchs au meilleur des trois sets.

Dans le cadre d’un bouleversement du circuit de tennis en 2009, la Masters Series est devenue l’ATP Tour Masters 1000, avec l’ajout du nombre 1000 faisant référence au nombre de points de classement gagnés par le vainqueur de chaque tournoi. Contrairement aux plans antérieurs, le nombre de tournois n’a pas été réduit de neuf à huit et le Masters de Monte-Carlo est resté dans la série bien que, contrairement aux autres événements, il n’ait pas d’engagement obligatoire des joueurs. L’ événement Hamburg Masters a été rétrogradé à un événement ATP Tour 500 . Le Masters de Madrid a déménagé en mai et sur terre battue. Un nouveau tournoi à Shanghaia remplacé le Hamburg Masters et a repris l’ancien créneau intérieur d’octobre de Madrid. Tournois
